5 Best Black Baseball Players

The game of baseball continues to be one of the most popular sports around the world while also being reintroduced to the international stage for the 2028 Summer Olympics. While the game is played around the world and producing many great Major League Baseball Players, one trend that continues to drop inside the United States is the number of African American baseball player playing the game. This includes the younger generation starting with little league baseball up through the ranks to include Major League Baseball. At the start of the 2023 MLB season, the number of black baseball players in MLB dropped from 7.2 percent to 6.2 percent.

As the game looks to find ways to drive these numbers up, the game still features many great black baseball players to include the New York Yankees center fielder and 2022 MLB MVP Aaron Judge. As Judge stands out as one of the Best Black Baseball Players in 2024, he is joined on the list by other top baseball players Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cedric Mullins of the Baltimore Orioles, Michael Harris II of the Atlanta Braves, and Marcus Stroman of the Chicago Cubs.

While the current black baseball players of today continue to highlight the game, the history of baseball is filled with All-Time Great Black Baseball players including the likes of Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Ken Griffey Jr to name a few. 5 Best Black Baseball Players 2024

1. Aaron Judge – New York Yankees (Center Fielder)

The New York Yankees All-Star center fielder and 2022 AL MVP Award winner continues to compile a brilliant MLB resume including another 2023 MLB stat line.

Judge who is currently 31 is coming off an injury plagued 2023 MLB season while finishing up the season with 37 home runs and 75 runs batted in across just 106 total games played.

Despite missing time, Judge posted his third straight season with at least 37 home runs and fourth of his entire career. As the 2023 MLB season end, Judge has compiled a stat lie of 846 career hits, 257 home runs, and 572 runs driven in while posting a career .282 batting average.

In addition to his numbers Judge has been selected to five MLB All-Star teams, earned both the AL MVP and AL Rookie of the Year Award while also taking home three Silver Slugger Awards.

2. Mookie Betts – Los Angeles Dodgers (Right Fielder)

Joining judge among the best black baseball players in Major League Baseball is the Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder and NL MVP candidate Mookie Betts. 

Betts who is the same age as Judge has also put together a strong career resume while splitting time between the Boston Red Sox and now with the Dodgers. Since arriving in the Majors back in 2014, Betts has won two World Series Championships, made seven MLB All-Star appearances, won an AL MVP Award and won six Gold Gloves.

His high level of production continued during the 2023 MLB season while batting .307 with 39 home runs and 107 runs batted in for the first place Dodgers.

3. Michael Harris II – Atlanta Braves (Center Fielder)

A fresh young star emerging in Major League Baseball is the Atlanta Braves center fielder who is just 22 years old while putting together a hot start to his young career.

Harris who took the NL Rookie of the Year last year after a hot debut in the Majors continued to be a key asset in the Braves lineup and in the outfield during the 2023 MLB season.

The Braves outfielder played stellar defense during the duration of the season while also hitting 18 home runs, driving in 57 runs, and steal 20 bases.

His continued production has moved him up among the list of the best black baseball players in 2024.

4. Cedric Mullins – Baltimore Orioles (Center Fielder)

One MLB player that is often overlooked around the game is the Baltimore Orioles center fielder Cedric Mullins. Mullins who has been apart of some bad seasons in Baltimore, was a key member of the Orioles team that bounced to 100 plus wins this season.

The long time Oriole who made his debut back in 2018 finished off his third full time season in the Majors posting 23 doubles, 15 home runs, 74 runs batted in, while also stealing 19 bases despite playing in just 112 total games.

Since his debut in 2018, Mullins has been consistent for the Orioles while earning on AL All-Star selection, winning one Silver Slugger Award, as well as becoming a member of the 30 home run, 30 stolen base club.

5. Marcus Stroman – Chicago Cubs (Starting Pitcher)

Rounding out the 5 Best Black Baseball Players in 2024 is the Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Marcus Stroman.

As the oldest player on the list the Cubs starting pitcher continues to be a strong starting pitcher in baseball while picking up his fourth double digit win total for the season.

Stroman, who made his debut back during the 2014 MLB season, has pitched to an earned run average under four in all but three of his MLB seasons while pitching to a career 3.65 earned run average mark.

Over his career Stroman has racked up a Gold Glove Award, two All-Star selections, and even won the World Baseball Classic MVP back during the 2017 WBC.
